When customers order a coffee, they might not think about what happened before the beans reached the grinder, but every stage of that journey has an impact on what ends up in their cup.
Origin, variety and processing all influence flavour, but one of the most important stages happens much closer to home: roasting.
Our approach combines two roasting techniques using our Loring Smart Roast, helping us produce smooth, clean and consistent coffee for our wholesale customers.
For cafés, restaurants, hotels and other hospitality businesses, that consistency matters. When customers come back for the same coffee, they expect the same quality every time.
Why Does Roasting Matter?
Green coffee beans don't arrive tasting like the coffee your customers know and love.
During roasting, heat causes a series of changes within the bean that develop its aroma, sweetness, body and flavour. The decisions made throughout this process can dramatically influence the finished coffee.
Roast too aggressively and some of the more subtle characteristics of the coffee can be lost. Get the roast profile right and you can bring out the qualities you want while creating a balanced finished cup.
For a hospitality business, the right roast also gives your baristas a strong foundation to work from. Great equipment and good technique matter, but the quality and consistency of the beans going into the machine are just as important.
What Is Dual Roasting?
At Bró, we use a Loring Smart Roast and combine two roasting techniques as part of our approach.
Rather than thinking about roasting as simply making beans lighter or darker, it's about carefully managing how heat is applied throughout the roast.
Combining roasting techniques gives us greater control over how the coffee develops, allowing us to work towards the flavour, body and finish we're looking for.
The result is coffee designed to deliver the smoothness, balance and clean finish that characterises Bró – whether it's being served as an espresso, Americano, flat white or latte.
Consistency Matters Behind the Bar
For a business serving dozens or hundreds of coffees, consistency isn't a nice extra. It's an important part of the customer experience.
If the characteristics of the coffee vary significantly from one batch to another, it can make it more difficult for baristas to achieve consistent results.
Our roasting approach helps us work towards consistency from batch to batch, giving hospitality teams a reliable starting point when dialling in their equipment and preparing drinks.
Of course, there are still plenty of variables behind the bar – including grind size, dose, extraction and milk technique – which is why we also support our wholesale customers with barista training and technical expertise.
Small-Batch Roasted in County Down
Technology is only one part of the story.
Our coffee is roasted locally in County Down in small batches by our SCA Qualified Roaster & Blender, Gareth.
Small-batch roasting allows close attention to be paid to each roast and helps us maintain the consistency we're looking for from one batch to the next.
It's a combination of quality beans, specialist equipment and the experience of the person behind the roaster.
For our wholesale customers, it also means serving coffee that's been locally roasted rather than simply choosing another off-the-shelf option.
It's Not About Roasting as Dark as Possible
One of the biggest misconceptions about coffee is that a darker roast automatically means a stronger or better cup.
Different coffees have different characteristics, and the job of the roaster is to understand those beans and develop a profile that brings out what we want from them.
That could mean highlighting chocolatey richness, sweetness, nuttiness or some of the brighter characteristics found within a blend.
It's why roasting is as much a craft as it is a science – and why choosing the right coffee for your business should be about more than simply choosing a roast level.
Better Coffee Starts Before the Machine
When you're looking at improving the coffee you serve, it's easy to focus entirely on what's happening behind the counter.
The machine, grinder and barista all play a major part, but great coffee starts long before the first espresso is pulled.
By combining two roasting techniques, using the precision of our Loring Smart Roast and roasting locally in small batches, we're able to create coffee with the smoothness, balance and consistency businesses need to serve a great cup time after time.
And when you work with Bró Wholesale, the support doesn't end with the beans. From coffee machines and servicing to barista training and technical support, we can help you build a coffee setup that works for your team, your customers and your business.
